Cultural Opportunities in Davis County

The Davis County Fine Arts Council was formed in 1977 to meet the cultural needs of Davis County residents. At that time it purchased the Iowa Theatre on the Bloomfield Square which has since undergone extensive renovation to serve the needs of the Davis County Players (a subsidiary of the Arts Council) and the movie operation sponsored by the Arts Council. The Arts Council also owns the Kay Burchette Cultural Center, a building adjacent to the Iowa Theatre which was also renovated by the Arts Council.

Cultural opportunities offered by the Davis County Fine Arts Council and its subsidiary groups (Davis County Players and Spectrum Center for the Arts) include:

• Annual Courtyard Arts Festival

• Art shows

• Theatrical productions (fall musical, spring play, summer children’s theater)

• Variety shows featuring local performers

• Children’s Chorale

• Community Choir (occasional)

• Community Band (occasional)

• Guest artists (musicians, dancers, actors)

• Workshops for youth and adults (theatre, music, dance)

• Weekend movies

• Allows use of Theatre for school productions since the school presently has no auditorium.

Cultural opportunities sponsored by other groups:

• Extensive, multi-building historical museum sponsored by Davis County Historical Society

• Civil War Re-enactments

• Large murals in the renovated old Elementary School, at the Historical Society, and at the post office

• Bluegrass Showcase concert

• Davis County Country Music Festival (several days in length, at the fairgrounds)

Davis County Schools’ arts activities:

• Elementary music and art classes

• Band, choir, and art instruction at the Middle School as well as annual junior high musical

• High School offers band (concert, jazz, marching) and choir plus multiple smaller musical ensembles and opportunities; music theory course; a variety of art classes; art shows; theatre and speech opportunities
